Clear Rules for AI
Welcome to Clear Rules for AI. This is a free project to help everyday Tasmanians understand how artificial intelligence is being governed, and to have their say on it.
That is the whole purpose. To help, and to make sure ordinary people are not left out of a conversation that will shape our island and our lives for years to come.
What we mean by clear rules
Clear rules matter at two scales.
There are the rules each of us keeps when we use these tools ourselves: staying in charge of our own judgement, our own values, and our own name on whatever we make. That is the personal scale.
Then there are the rules we ask of government: how the huge infrastructure behind AI is built and run, and who it is meant to serve. That is the civic scale.
They are two halves of the same thing. Understanding the tools and understanding how they are governed both belong to the one kind of clear thinking. This project cares about all of it.
Why this matters for Tasmania
Tasmania is a special place. Our clean hydro power makes us one of the most attractive spots in the world for the enormous data centres that run AI, and that interest is already here and growing fast.
That attention brings opportunity. It also brings hard questions about our power and our water, the finite public resources that make this state what it is and that belong to all of us.
Because our conditions are so clean, Tasmania has a rare chance to set a high standard. Which means we have no excuse to do this badly.
Not anti-technology, but deeply concerned
Let me be clear about where I stand, because it is easily misread. I am not against AI. I teach people to use these tools well every week, and I have seen how much good they can do.
But I care deeply about this land, its people, and how this technology is ruled. Protecting what we love and welcoming new technology are not opposites. We can do both, if we insist on it.
What we intend to do
This project has two simple aims.
The first is to help Tasmanians understand what is happening, in plain language, with no jargon and no alarm. Just clear, honest information you can trust.
The second is to help you have your voice heard. When the time comes to speak up, we will show you how, and make it easy.
We are starting with AI data centres, because that is the question in front of Tasmania right now. But our concern is wider than any single topic. It is about all of us having a clear, informed say in how AI is governed, for our place and our future.
